Description

The Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division of The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is offering a Bachelor's or Master's level internship opportunity.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to gain knowledge in human physiological responses to heat, cold and/or high altitude.

Why should I apply?

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas, including but not limited to:

  • Federal laboratory and operational protocols including the planning and organization of research studies, data collection from human volunteer subjects (for example, exercise testing, thermal & cardiovascular responses to heat and cold, blood samples, etc.).
  • The physiology of responses to exercise and environment in humans, including core and skin temperatures, sweating, shivering, breathing and heart rate responses.
  • The knowledge and understanding about physiology research methodology associated with exercise and environment.

Please note this opportunity may include some travel to Pikes Peak, CO, to participate in research data collection for a study of physiology and exercise performance at high altitude.

Where will I be located?

Natick, Massachusetts

What is the anticipated start date?

USARIEM is ready to make an appointment immediately.  Exact start date will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

About USARIEM

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter health and performance science and its applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, and nutrition research. USARIEM's highly skilled scientists conduct research in Biophysics & Biomedical Modeling (BBMD), Military Nutrition (MND), Military Performance (MPD), and Thermal & Mountain Medicine (TMMD).  For more information about the USARIEM, please visit https://www.usariem.army.mil/.

The Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division (TMMD) researches the physiological impacts of exposure to extreme environments (heat, cold, altitude, subterranean) to mitigate the adverse effects of these environmental stressors on the health, performance, and mission-readiness of military personnel. TMMD’s research seeks to optimize and enhance physical and cognitive performance and prevent illness associated with military operations at environmental extremes, such as heat, cold, high terrestrial altitude, and subterranean spaces. TMMD’s research supports physiological modeling and military materiel developers of clothing, equipment, food, and pharmaceuticals.
