The US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering a bachelor's level opportunity at the Natick, Massachusetts facility.

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to develop your skills as a nutrition scientist by participating in the development, planning, and execution of a randomized controlled trial.
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. This developmental opportunity will provide you the chance to conduct dietary analysis and gain experience with technical aspects of data collection, including meal administration, review of dietary intake and collection of anthropometric and performance measurements. Additionally, you will participate in study coordination activities and gain experience with dietary intake assessment.

What is the anticipated start date
The USARIEM is ready to make an appointment November 1, 2021. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a five month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. Participation time will start at 10% and will increase to 100% in Spring 2022.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USARIEM
USARIEM is internationally recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance. The Institute is organized into five divisions: Biophysics and Biomedical Modeling, Military Nutrition, Military Performance, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. By leveraging its unique capabilities and facilities with industry, academia, and the government, USARIEM produces a variety of important products, including performance optimization doctrine, preventive medicine and planning doctrine, materiel development support, physiological monitoring strategies and predictive algorithms, and Health Hazard Assessments.
The Military Nutrition Division conducts nutrition research that provides the biomedical science basis for developing new rations, menus, policies and programs to enable Warfighter readiness, optimal performance and lethality. Areas of research include performance and recovery nutrition, military feeding and combat ration support, understanding eating behaviors, dietary supplement use and physiological resilience.
About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in nutrition or dietetics. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
Experience and qualifications desired include human research coordination, familiarity with methods of dietary assessment/intake, survey administration, and the Registered Dietitian credential. Candidate must have an interest in furthering his/her research skillset in diet analysis.
