USARIEM, located in Natick, Massachusetts, is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter health and performance science and its applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, and nutrition research. The Military Nutrition Division (MND) conducts research on nutritional issues affecting the health and mission-readiness of military personnel, and supports the US Army Surgeon General’s responsibilities as the Department of Defense’s executive agent for nutrition research. This state-of-the-art facility contains environmental chambers for controlling temperature and humidity, an environmentally controlled hypobaric chamber, a water immersion laboratory, as well as several dry and wet laboratories for animal and human experimentation. The dry laboratories are capable of a broad range of experiments, including biomechanical analysis, body composition, energy expenditure, muscle strength and endurance. The wet laboratories include general clinical chemistry analyzers, as well as equipment for ELISA, RIA, histology, and molecular biology assays. Each investigator at the facility has a personal computer with software for data management, analysis, presentation and report generation. Their computers are interfaced with a network server for easy, secure data handling and transfer.
Ongoing studies within the MND have highlighted the integrative effects of diet composition and exercise on substrate oxidation and performance. In particular, MND is seeking a MS-level research participant to take part in the execution of randomized controlled trials that examine impact of nutrition, exercise, dietary supplements, and pharmacological interventions for Warfighters exposed to military operational stress. As a participant you will receive hands-on experience collecting data from exercise testing, indirect calorimetry, stable isotope methodologies, and biological samples. Additionally, you will receive experience analyzing and interpreting data for presentation and publication.
Please note, this learning opportunity can support multiple participants.
Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
