Description

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its practical applications. This ORISE fellowship is an opportunity to collaborate on ongoing studies within the Military Nutrition Division, focusing on the integrative effects of dietary composition and exercise on substrate oxidation and physical performance.

What will I be doing?

As part of this learning experience, you will assist with the execution of randomized controlled trials that examine the impact of nutrition, exercise, dietary supplements, and pharmacological interventions for Warfighters exposed to military operational stress. During your appointment, you will receive hands-on experience collecting data from exercise testing, indirect calorimetry, stable isotope methodologies, and biological samples. This fellowship will also provide you the opportunity to gain experience analyzing biological samples using benchtop laboratory techniques, such as Western blotting, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and enzyme activity assays. Beyond experiences with data collection and analysis, you will have the opportunity to travel and present research findings at annual scientific and military conferences.

What is the anticipated start date?

USARIEM is ready to make an appointment effective early June 2025. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a full-time research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend, which will be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Relocation Allowance.
  • Training and Travel Allowance.

Nature of Appointment

As a participant, you will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), in Natick, Massachusetts has four divisions: Military Nutrition, Military Performance, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications

Qualified candidates must be pursuing a degree or received a degree within six months of a bachelor's or master's degree in:

  • Biology (General)
  • Nutritional Sciences
  • Physiology 

Highly competitive applicants will have experience or skills in the following:

  • Experience in exercise physiology and/or sports nutrition
  • Experience with molecular biology wet laboratory techniques
  • Experience using SPSS for statistical analysis
