The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), is a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its practical applications. USARIEM is seeking a full-time summer applicant who has earned or is currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree.
This summer appointment will focus on the ongoing studies within the Military Nutrition Division's research on the integrative effects of diet composition, exercise, and environmental exposure on substrate oxidation and performance. This appointment will provide an opportunity to execute randomized controlled trials that examine the impact of nutrition, exercise, and dietary supplements for Warfighters exposed to military operational stress while providing hands-on experience collecting data from exercise testing, indirect calorimetry, stable isotope methodologies, and biological samples.

What is the anticipated start date?
USARIEM is ready to make an appointment effective early June 2025. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
Appointment Length
This appointment is a three-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the provisions?
You will receive a stipend, which will be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

- Relocation Allowance
- Training and Travel Allowance
Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
About USARIEM
The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), in Natick, Massachusetts, is recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance.
The Institute has four divisions: Military Nutrition, Military Performance, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualified candidates will have earned a bachelor's or master's or be a current student with an anticipated degree received by August 29, 2025, in the following fields:
- Environmental Health
- Kinesiology and Exercise Physiology
- Nutritional Sciences
Highly competitive applicants will have experience or skills in the following:
- Experience in exercise physiology and/or sport nutrition
- Experience with molecular biology wet laboratory techniques
- Experience using SPSS for statistical analysis
