Description

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its practical applications. USARIEM is seeking a currently pursuing or degree-received master's or doctoral degree applicant.

What will I be doing?

The ORISE participant will be actively engaged in research projects that align with the agency's mission to optimize Warfighter health and performance through medical research. This includes but is not limited to a current project focusing on the efficacy of holistic health and fitness integrators. This position will provide the participant with hands-on experience and opportunities to expand their knowledge and skills in areas relevant to military performance research. Project Assignments may include but are not limited to the following: Participating in research studies' design and implementation. The participant may contribute to developing research protocols, including study design, data collection methods, and statistical analysis plans. They may also assist in collecting and analyzing data, interpreting findings, and preparing manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Conduct literature reviews and synthesize research findings: The participant may review and summarize existing literature to identify research gaps, inform study design, and contribute to evidence-based practice guidelines. Collaborate with researchers and clinicians: The participant will have the opportunity to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians, and other stakeholders, including the Army and Defense Health Agency, to advance research goals and translate findings into clinical practice.

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a one-year research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by the Department of Defense (DoD). Stipends are typically based on a participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Training and Travel Allowance

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

About USARIEM

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), in Natick, Massachusetts, is recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. Military guidance has been published for operations in heat, cold, and high-altitude environments and nutrition for health and performance.

The Institute has four divisions: Military Nutrition, Military Performance, Thermal and Mountain Medicine, and Research Support. By leveraging its unique capabilities and facilities with industry, academia, and the government, USARIEM produces various essential products, including performance optimization doctrine, preventive medicine, planning doctrine, materiel development support, physiological monitoring strategies and predictive algorithms, and Health Hazard Assessments.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications
Educational Background and Qualifications for this Appointment: 
A higher educational degree in any of the following fields of study: medicine and allied health professions, life sciences, public health, engineering, technology, or social sciences from an accredited institution.
 
The ideal candidate will be strongly interested in holistic health and fitness interventions and their impact on military personnel. The ability to participate effectively with diverse populations, including military personnel and healthcare providers, is essential. Experience with data management and analysis software is highly desirable. This ORISE opportunity offers a unique professional development and growth platform in military medicine research.
