The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is recognized as the DoD's premier laboratory for Warfighter health and performance research and focuses on environmental medicine, physiology, physical and cognitive performance, and nutrition research. What will I be doing?

The study will assess the outcomes of a novel post-operative rehabilitation program for Soldiers who undergo surgical management of a lower quarter injury. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will have the opportunity to expand your skill sets and gain valuable training and experience to further your scientific development and will have the opportunity to learn more about:

• Recruiting study participants in a military setting
• Collecting, managing, and analyzing data 
• Proposing, analyzing, publishing, and disseminating research including publications and national presentations
• Assisting in physical performance and injury risk screenings
• Assisting in providing injury prevention education classes to Soldiers, medical providers, and leadership as appropriate?

What is the anticipated start date?

The USARIEM is ready to make appointments effective early 2024. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

Appointment Length

This is a full-time, 12-month appointment, and may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and participant availability.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate must have received either a doctorate degree in Physical Therapy or master's degree in Athletic Training.

Additional Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship
• Currently (or eligible to be) licensed to practice Physical Therapy or Athletic Training in Georgia 
• Excellent organizational skills
• Attention to detail.
• Sound skills in written and oral communication
• First Aid/ CPE/ AED Certified
• Must be able to pass a Federal Background Check

Highly competitive applicants will have the following knowledge, skills and qualities:

• Experience in post-operative rehabilitation
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (word, outlook, and excel)
• Experience with statistical analysis software (R, SPSS, etc)
• Experience working with members of the military.
• 1-2 years of experience working with large groups
• 1-2 years of research experience
• Board certification in Orthopedics or Sports Physical Therapy
• Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist
