The Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division of The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering an Undergraduate Internship in the research area of environmental physiology for the summer of 2023.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers to understand human physiological responses to environmental extremes, with a focus on high terrestrial altitude.
Why should I apply?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. You will also engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to:
- Experience in federal laboratory and operational protocols for doing research with human subjects
- Traveling to Pikes Peak, CO, to participate in research data collection for a study of physiology and exercise performance at high altitude.
- Learning about research in Natick, MA, using a hypobaric chamber to simulate a high-altitude environment
- Learning to take measurements of variables including heart rate, oxygen consumption, and core temperature during exercise
Where will I be located?
Natick, Massachusetts
What is the anticipated start date?
The USARIEM is ready to make an appointment effective in Summer 2023. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:
- Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE)
- Relocation Allowance
- Training and Travel Allowance
Nature of Appointment
