The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is offering a faculty level research fellowship at JBSA Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

What will I be doing?

As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will engage in developing and testing therapeutics to decrease organ failure in the combat casualty. The primary focus of this research opportunity is to examine and evaluate the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of novel therapeutics in extracorporeal life support and traumatic animal models with organ failure to aid in the development of novel therapies and modalities to improve outcomes in injured war fighter and patients on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). This opportunity provides you, as the faculty participant, the opportunity to learn new scientific applications of traumatic organ failure models and extracorporeal life support systems such as lung and renal support devices to pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of novel therapeutics.

Where will I be located? San Antonio, Texas or remotely as approved by the USAISR. 

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment is a twelve-month faculty research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the provisions? 

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other provisions may include the following:

• Relocation Allowance
• Training and Travel Allowance

About USAISR

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The mission of the Institute is to "Optimize Combat Casualty Care".

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The qualified candidate be a current faculty member at an institution of higher education and will have a PhD in Pharmacology or Registered Pharmacist (RPh) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).

Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

• Clinical experience in research pharmacology, physiological based pharmacokinetic models, design of dose finding studies, and FDA approval and regulations
• Ability to rapidly synthesize large amounts of data (labs, test results, etc.)
• Demonstrated competence in oral and written communication in English
• Organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive, friendly, and professional demeanor
• Computer skills including at least intermediate level experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office Software
