USAISR Biomedical Research Internship

The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering bachelor's or master's level internships for current or recently graduated students at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR).
What will I be doing?
As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join a community of scientists, engineers, and researchers in an effort to develop medical automation research solutions. You will gain experience in various biomedical research projects related to automating combat casualty care. These projects include automating ultrasound image interpretation, testing automated medical systems through animal and human research studies, and developing custom human tissue phantoms for conducting research in a lab setting.

- Conducting human and animal translational research studies
- Curating and annotating large medical datasets for developing machine learning algorithms
- Developing medical tissue phantoms suitable for ultrasound imaging tasks
- Analyzing large datasets for medical trends to inform development of automation technology
- Preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed research journals

What is the anticipated start date?
Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the provisions?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USAISR
The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The mission of the Institute is to "Optimize Combat Casualty Care". About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate will have an earned bachelor's or master's degree or will have completed by May 31, 2028, in any of the disciplines listed in the opportunity’s Eligibility criteria. Postgraduates, degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date. U.S. military veterans who have been honorably discharged (or who have been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability) and who received a bachelor's or master's degree within ten years of the desired start date are also eligible.
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
- Completed coursework in chemistry, biological, or medical sciences
- An interest in engineering, automation, and technology-related medical research
