Description

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is offering a fellowship at JBSA Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will be joining the Organ Support & Automation Technology Research Team at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research in an effort to collect and analyze data supporting combat casualty care and trauma-related injuries. You will conduct research in performance testing, data modeling and validation, and other related human research in collaboration with a small cross-functional team of researchers, clinicians, data scientists, and biomedical engineers.

  • Data extraction from human and animal datasets (Familiar with database, SQL, and Python)

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment is a twelve-/month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits? 

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USAISR

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The mission of the Institute is to "Optimize Combat Casualty Care".

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will hold or be currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science, statistics, or other science-related field. If postgraduate, the degree must have been received within 5 years of the appointment start date.

Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

  • Research experience 
  • Excellent communication and scientific writing skills  
  • Ability to collaborate with a team
  • Willingness to learn about decision support applications, training, and education
  • Technical Skills:
    • Programming languages (SQL, Python, Matlab, etc)
    • Importing, cleaning, transforming, validating and/or model development for the purpose of decision making
    • Establishing data requirements and documentation (Coding lab notebook)
    • Strong skills in Excel with experience in macro development
    • General knowledge of statistical software including JMP, SASS, R, etc.
    • Familiarity with clinical data and electronic medical records or informatics
