Description

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research is offering a Master's level internship at Joint Base San Antonio.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to research projects focused on medical automation. Specifically, you will assist with various mechanical engineering aspects for developing medical devices to support hemodynamic management, such as devices to insert needles into the vasculature and for closed loop resuscitation. In addition, you will research expanding current Joint Trauma Systems CPGs for PFC scenarios and research the design of a knowledge-based system, encapsulating these guidelines to facilitate development of a mobile decision support system that will enhance decision making at the point of injury during PFC. The eventual goals are to develop and validate this knowledge-based system and accompanying technologies, and transition them to a mobile environment for use on an Android platform, akin to the Army Nett Warrior or SOCOM Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK) platforms.

The fellow with be trained on computer aided design and engineering fabrication processes relevant to these ongoing research efforts.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a 12 month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

About USAISR

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command of the U.S. Army Medicine Command. The Institute is the Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties. The mission of the Institute is to "Optimize Combat Casualty Care". The Engineering Technology and Automation Combat Casualty Care Research Team at USAISR is developing technologies and products that will assist medics in providing life-saving interventions in the Prolonged Field Care (PFC) environment.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate should be pursuing a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
