The Battlefield Health and Trauma Buildings (BHT1 and BHT2) of the US Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) are located next to Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). Our laboratory facilities for Maxillofacial Trauma Research within the Division of Combat Wound Repair have approximately 7,584 gross square feet, are located on the ground floor of the four-story building of BHT2, a tri-service facility also occupied by the US Air Force and Navy. The building is designed so that the administrative offices, approximately 2,282 gross square feet, and laboratories, which do not use animals, are located on floors one through three. The lower level houses the Veterinary Support Services Branch, and the animal research and surgery suites. The USAISR has extensive support staff and facilities, including statisticians and dedicated research personnel. All USAISR investigators are equipped with private offices on site. Onsite biomedical equipment repair facilities are available to support the needs of USAISR investigators.

The candidate selected for this opportunity will participate in an ongoing study to develop planar delivering platforms for effective delivery of pharmaceutical active agents targeting both gram-positive and -negative wound pathogens for controlling burn wound infection. Limiting burn wound infection is one of the mission requirements within the Division of Combat Wound Repair at ISR. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will have opportunities to interact with other research fellows and scientists to augment their knowledge and skill sets beyond formulation development. These include hands-on experience in researching  ex vivo anti-biofilm assays for evaluating candidate antimicrobial agents and collaborating with other fellows to perform animal studies to evaluate treatment efficacy of various planar delivering platforms for antimicrobials developed in the laboratories.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAISR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.


The candidate must have a PHD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field..
