This summer psychology opportunity will facilitate the educational and professional experiences of undergraduate students seeking to develop their abilities and expand upon their interests in aeromedical operational psychology.
The undergraduate student participate will have an opportunity to take part in a specialized research project. Concluding this learning opportunity, the participant will be expected to complete a professionally written research report that may be submitted for publication as an official USAF aerospace and operational physiologist (AOP) Technical Report. Under the guidance of a mentor, the report would be accompanied by a 30 minute presentation. To accomplish this objective, the undergraduate participant will take part in the following:

1. Proposing a research topic to investigate based on the archival data collected from the various AOP occupational health, psychological assessment, and performance optimization projects. The topic must be approved by AOP staff and clinical (e.g., suicide ideation, post-traumatic stress disorder, medically significant psychological distress, etc.) or non-clinical (e.g., analyzing and reporting on normative cognitive and non-cognitive psychological test scores for airmen in specialized career fields). AOP staff will support the participant with developing their research topic relevant to improving psychological health and readiness of airmen.
2. Developing the research paper/presentation that includes: introduction (answering the questions of the "who," "what,"" "why," summarizing relevant literature, and hypothesis-how the study adds to the existing literature); method (participants, measures, procedures); results (tables and outcomes from data analyses to investigate study objectives and hyphothesis); and discussion (how do the results compare with the relevant literature and support or not the study hypothesis, the actionable recommendations from the outcomes for improving psychological health of airmen within the targeted, specialized career field).

This learning experience will provide the participant with access to unique research opportunities that will facilitate educational and professional development with the application of psychological theories, principles, and constructs in relation to specific psychological health and performance outcomes within unique military communities (i.e., aircrew, special duty and intelligence operators). The participant will have access to multiple resources and staff to support in the development of their skills and education. This will include, but not be limited to: attendance at AOP staff lectures and trainings to further develop knowledge in operational psychology and research, access to hundreds of journals and texts and various library resources for research, engagement with a multi-disciplinary research team composed of statisticians, industrial organizational psychologists, clinical psychologists, technicians, and subject matter experts.

Appointment Length

This ORISE appointment period is from May through August of 2019.  Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by AFSAM. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Undergraduate (junior level or equivalent) student in Psychology at an APA accredited 4-year program.
