The Air Force Research Laboratory is offering postgraduate fellowships at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
What will I be doing?
As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to conduct research in social robotics, autonomous driving, and related projects. You will investigate the design and psychological consequences of
- robotics
- experimental design
- social psychology
- autonomy/AI
You will also mentor and coach junior scientists, including undergraduate research students.
Where will I be located? Colorado Springs, Colorado
What is the anticipated start date?
Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAFA. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USAFA
The Warfighter Effectiveness Research Center is the research arm of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the United States Air Force Academy, facilitating faculty and cadet research that enhances warfighter effectiveness. The WERC conducts a wide range of research and design projects for operational customers including special operations forces, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Air Force Research Laboratory, and Army Research Laboratory. These projects are based in the behavioral sciences and connect to a wide range of disciplines and collaborators across government labs, academia, industry, and military operators in order to generate the most innovative and effective solutions. Studies involve cadets and their educational outcomes are a top priority in any research conducted in the WERC. About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate will have a Master's or Doctoral degree, earned within the last 5 years or awaiting graduation by December 31, 2021.
Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:
- Human-robot interaction
- Human-automation interaction
- Augmented and virtual reality
- Human Factors, HCI, applied psychology, social psychology, computer science,
- and/or systems engineering
- Programming in python, unity, and/ or ROS
- Critical evaluation of literature
- Experimental design
- Project management
- Data analysis techniques
- Fluency in a programming language or statistical analysis software (SPSS,
- SAS, R, MATLAB, etc.) is a plus
- Data Interpretation ?
Ability to communicate effectively through the following media:
- Conference briefings and talks to high profile stakeholders
- Grant application and white paper development and writing
- Scientific publications
