The Natural Resources Management (NRM) Program Support team is located within the Institute for Water Resources (IWR) office of the US Army Corps of Engineers. The mission of the NRM Program support team as a whole is to manage and conserve natural resources on Corps lands, consistent with ecosystem management principles, while providing quality outdoor public recreation experiences, to serve the needs of present and future generation. The NRM Program Support team at IWR provides a comprehensive set of operational, technical, and research and development (R&D) support, program evaluation, and leadership strategies to the larger NRM program.
What will I be doing?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will participate in research primarily on projects related to USACE's Natural Resources Management Programs and any other research projects that are mutually beneficial. You will evaluate and explore analytical and research methods associated with USACE's natural resources programs that have immediate influence on the people who utilize USACE recreational opportunities and the impacts of those uses on the environmental integrity of the Corps managed properties, with an emphasis on analytical tools to better measure, evaluate, and understand land use trends and impacts. You will utilize experience and research skills to identify means to apply current advanced research practices and understanding to inform tool development that will benefit USACE HQ. Experience will be gained in field operations and the analysis of existing data and while also exploring metrics associated with activities performed in support of recreation and natural resource management. Finally, you will collaborate with the mentor to foster collaborations, research endeavors, tech transfer, and engagement with the research and academic communities.

What is the anticipated start date?
USACE-IWR is ready to make an appointment immediately. Exact start date will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidates.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by USACE-IWR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

- Training and Travel Allowance
This ORISE appointment is a twelve month opportunity. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Nature of the Appointment
You will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
You should have a bachelor's or higher degree that would support research projects on economics, environmental science, recreation and tourism or natural resources management with combined technical training, work experience and relevant publications. Experience or education related to environmental science, economics or applied recreation and environmental economics will be ideal. Experience or education related to environmental and experimental economics, and natural resource would be an advantage. You should have good communication and critical thinking skills and be detailed oriented. Data analysis using a range of tools and statistical methods is desired, and experience using excel and other data analysis tools such as R, python, SAS, GIS, etc. is preferred.
