The Southern Command Public Health Analyst Fellow will collaborate with the Chief of Medical Plans and Operations and assists in the development of a theater public health and force health protection strategy and policy for USSOUTHCOM, Service component commands, and Security Cooperation Offices (SCO) in the Area of Responsibility (AOR). As a public health analyst fellow, you will review and evaluate the effectiveness of USSOUTHCOM public health partner nation engagements, training programs, force health protection programs and preventive medicine aspects of pandemic influenza /infectious disease, disaster, and contingency plans. Under the guidance of a mentor you will assist with oversight of Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) executed programs to detect, identify, contain and recover from pandemic influenza (Pl) or infectious disease (ID) outbreaks in the command area of operation as a part of Pl/ID contingency plan phase activities. During this fellowship you will learn to evaluate and update the communicable disease program to keep pace with major changes in Federal, State, and local laws and programs and collaborate with Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center (AFHSC)/Global Emerging Infectious Disease System (GEIS)/ Department of Defense HIV/AIDS Program (DHAPP)) to facilitate DoD research initiatives within the SOUTHCOM AOR.

Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by . Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.
- The individual should have a background in Public Health/Preventive Medicine
- The individual should have some field experience in Public Health/Preventive Medicine
- The individual must have completed a Master of Public Health Degree
- Citizenship: U.S. Citizen Only
- Degree: Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 month(s).
