ORNL Corrosion Science and Technology Group Laboratory Technology Associate
The Corrosion Science and Technology Group within the Materials Science and Technology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Laboratory Technology Associate to operate and maintain high temperature heat treatment furnaces, high pressure/vacuum furnaces, and other associated research equipment.
The Laboratory Technology Associate will also be responsible for the organization of lab space and will work with other team members to ensure the area is suitable for ongoing research programs. Additionally, he or she will be responsible for data collection and management.
The Associate will also be responsible for conducting research in a variety of programs. For example, these activities could include developing research tasks to achieve program goals, reviewing these tasks with supervisors, and determining best practices for attaining research goals.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Set up and maintain equipment
- Record operating data from laboratory equipment including flow pumps, pressure transducers/gauges, and balances
- Maintain job files, safety records, maintenance records, and sample inventory
- Work under direction of the supervisor on assigned projects while maintaining a team atmosphere with other technicians
- Communicate data and results with supervisor in a clear and logical manner
- Provide project completion schedules to supervisor
- Communicate with customers to understand their requirements
Candidates should have credit in the mechanical or chemical engineering technology fields at the community college level. Additionally, candidates should possess the ability to conduct themselves in a safe manner and follow ORNL safety rules/procedures. Training in safe operation of electrical, mechanical, and chemical processes will be provided/required.
Preferred:
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to regularly move or lift 10 lbs., frequently 25 lbs. and occasionally 50 lbs.
- Experience with computers and a strong working knowledge of MS Office products
- Ability to perform mathematical and scientific computations
- Experience in a laboratory environment
- Mechanical skills
- Ability to multi-task
