ORNL Carbon Materials Laboratory Technology Associate
The Carbon Materials Laboratory Technology Associate will be responsible for the operation and maintenance (either conducting it or arranging it) on heat treatment furnaces, pressure furnaces, and polymer extruders. The Laboratory Technology Associate will also be responsible for the organization of lab space and will work with the supervisor to ensure the organization is suitable to the ongoing research programs. Further, the individual will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the 3D printers used in the Carbon Materials Technology group. The Associate will work with other Associates and interns to produce parts for the programs.
The Laboratory Technology Associate will also be responsible for conducting research in a variety of programs. These include developing research tasks to achieve program goals, reviewing these tasks with the supervisor, and coming to agreement on best practices for attaining research goals. Next, the Associate will conduct the research, record results, and produce materials. In addition, he or she will conduct analysis on the produced materials including SEM, Mechanical testing, and thermal testing to characterize the performance of the materials.
Candidates should possess the ability to conduct themselves in a safe manner, following all ORNL safety rules, SBMS, OSHA, and all other safety procedures. Training in safe operation in electrical, mechanical, and chemical operations will be required.
Course credit in the mechanical or chemical engineering technology fields at the community college level is preferred.
The ORNL Laboratory Technology Associate Program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
