ORNL Fire Department Technician
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy (DOE) science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy, environment, and security.
There are over 3,500 fire extinguishers installed at various facilities and on mobile vehicles across the ORNL Campus. The Fire Department inspects, tests, and maintains these fire extinguishers. The Fire Department uses a database to track the locations of the extinguishers and the IT&M history of each individual extinguisher. We are in the process of taking advantage of the latest geographic information system (GIS) mapping technology at available ORNL. The ORNL Fire Department will use the Technician to transfer the data from the database to the ORNL GIS Portal. The Technician will place fire extinguisher locations on facility maps and floor plans. These maps and floor plans will be available for viewing by the campus public so they can identify the closest fire extinguisher. It will also be available for facility managers who are required to submit floor plans that show locations of emergency equipment for State and Federal permitting purposes. Finally, the transfer of data from a database to a map will help the Fire Department staff with IT&M activities.
The Technician will need to be fluent in databases and geographic information systems. He or she will also need to have the ability to schedule appointments using Microsoft Outlook and communicate using electronic mail. The Technician will interface frequently with facility management and fire department personnel.
Candidate should have completed high school, should be enrolled/attending college, and should have experience with computers.
