Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy (DOE) science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy, environment, and security.
The Environmental Sciences Division is seeking a Computational Scientist Research Associate. The project involves testing and implementation to port an existing FORTRAN-based domain science process model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, Land Model component, or ELM) for operation on the Summit supercomputer. This port includes preliminary testing of simple subroutines on the NVIDIA GPU resources on the Summit compute nodes to assess I/O patterns and use of instruction space, as well as porting of the full science code to the Summit nodes. Technical challenges to be explored and solved in the project include efficient implementation of large input and output model requirements and management of multiple computational kernels with minimal redeployment of instructions to the GPU cores. Multiple parallelization strategies and programming models will be explored, with a primary emphasis on minimizing intrusive rewriting of science modules and a secondary emphasis on portability to other (current and future) High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms. The project has a duration of 12 months, and includes testing, implementation, and operation of the ported model for a large science application.
The position may involve travel for one project meeting during the 12-month period. All normal travel support will be provided by the sponsoring project.
Candidates should have a master’s degree in a physical science or computer science field, with coursework and research experience in computational methods as applied to physical science domain research problems. Proficiency in FORTRAN, and classroom or practical experience with one or more of the following high performance computing technologies: MPI, Open MP, OpenACC, CUDA. Experience working in a Linux environment.
Preferred
Preference will be given to candidates who are proficient in FORTRAN, and to candidates who have experience with one or more of the following parallelization technologies: MPI, Open MP, OpenACC, CUDA. Candidates with a strong background in a physical science field with practical experience applying advanced computational methods to research problems in that field, and candidates with a biological science or environmental science background will also be given strong consideration. Candidates with experience developing, implementing, or applying Earth system model (ESM) components, especially land model components of ESMs, will be given favorable consideration.
Living in East Tennessee: While the opportunity to work at ORNL is an amazing experience in itself, it’s easy to overlook everything else East Tennessee has to offer if you haven’t had the opportunity to spend time here. From spending your weekends downtown at Knoxville’s farmers market, the Rhythm n’ Blooms Music Festival, or the Dogwood Arts Festival, to some of the best hiking, kayaking, and camping in the U.S, East Tennessee has something to offer everyone.
The ORNL Post-Master’s Research Associate Program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
