Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy (DOE) science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy, environment, and security.

The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Web Development Post-Master’s Research Associate to join the Remote Sensing and Environmental Informatics group (https://www.ornl.gov/group/rsei). The candidate will contribute to the development of web-based tools for the discovery, integration, and visualization of environmental information. The Research Associate will join an enthusiastic team of developers, data scientists, and environmental scientists working in Remote Sensing and Environmental Informatics to provide integrated data products, data management and delivery systems and services, and data analytics to facilitate research, education, and decision-making in the environmental sciences.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Contribute to development and enhancement of the ORNL Identify Tool (prototype at https://webmap.ornl.gov/qaqc/identify), the Spatial Data Access Tool (at https://webmap.ornl.gov/ogc), and other web-based tools for integration and visualization of geospatial data.

Qualifications

Candidates should be pursuing or have earned a master’s degree in computer science, information science, geography, earth and environmental sciences, or related field.

Preferred

  • Experience with JavaScript (and popular libraries such as jQuery), HTML, CSS, and AJAX

  • Working knowledge of geospatial data formats and projections

  • Experience with SQL (e.g. MySQL and PostgreSQL) for the management of geospatial and scientific information systems

  • Domain knowledge of environmental science, climate, geography, and/or remote sensing is strongly preferred

  • Familiarity with Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards, ArcGIS, and Web Mapping Services

  • Experience with web design, usability evaluation, and usage metrics

  • Good interpersonal skills and experience working in a collaborative team environment.

The ORNL Post-Master’s Research Associate Program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
