Description

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The Biological and Nanoscale Systems Group (BNSG) at ORNL focuses on the characterization, integration, and adaptation of natural and synthetic systems across multiple length scales. A continuing emphasis is to characterize and understand how natural systems are organized at the nanoscale and how this organization contributes to biological function. To support this aim, an interdisciplinary group focuses on technology development with specific interest in biological imaging, biocompatible micro-and nanofabrication techniques, and high throughput screening technologies.

The BNSG is seeking a Post-Bachelor’s Research Associate to support interdisciplinary efforts within the group. Working independently, the Research Associate will develop and apply automated protein expression and activity screening systems. Major duties/responsibilities will include carrying out experiments, collecting and interpreting the data, solving complex problems, and preparing written data summaries and related graphics.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in engineering and experience in molecular biology, instrumentation, computer programming, and automated liquid handling.

Preferred:

  • Abilities related to microbial physiology, microbiology, and plan-microbe interactions
  • Experience with imaging and image analysis tools
  • Experience with scientific graphing and data analysis software
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team of scientists

The ORNL Post-Bachelor’s Research Associates Program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
