Description

The Post-Bachelor’s Research Associate will contribute to the development, documentation, user engagement, and support efforts of the DOE Systems Biology Knowledgebase (KBase). Development activities will include collaborative UI/UX design and implementation, software testing, coordination with software engineers and project management concerning product development, and analyzing trends in user feedback to assist team members in strategic development of KBase. Technical documentation activities include creating descriptive materials for the software, workflows, and data within KBase, as well as instructive materials concerning usability of the system, including written tutorials, guides, videos, graphics, and handouts. User engagement activities include demonstrating basic and advanced KBase functionality to diverse groups of scientists through workshops, presentations, and booth presence at conferences, user meetings, and with individual laboratories and workgroups as necessary. Support activities include triaging and resolving user support tickets satisfactorily while communicating with other team members about persistent issues that may affect development. This position will also be responsible for gathering and analyzing feedback about KBase from users to inform development, documentation, user engagement, and support activities. The selected candidate will be responsible for coordinating and executing communications for KBase via newsletters, social media, and targeted digital campaigns. Additionally, this Research Associate will contribute to coordination of KBase related activities locally at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biochemistry, or another biosciences discipline. The candidate should also have some experience doing supervised research in an academic or industry setting.

Preferred:

• Research experience in biochemistry or genomic sciences

• Experience using KBase and/or similar bioinformatics software

• Proficiency in written and verbal science communications

• Excellent interpersonal communication, team building, and networking skills

• Ability to conduct presentations for groups of scientists with varying knowledge of computational biology

• Customer service skills and willingness to assist product users

The ORNL Postgraduate Research Associates Program is administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
