Description

The Chemical Sciences Division invites applications for a post-masters research associate to assist with current nuclear analytical chemistry projects within the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry and Isotopics Laboratories.  The successful candidate will focus on ICPMS instrumentation and measurement protocols, for ICPMS systems used to analyze elemental and isotopic compositions of highly radioactive nuclear matrices. The successful candidate also will advance sample preparation and separation methods, and analytical procedures to support novel chemistry schemes, particularly for lanthanide and actinide elements.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Collaborate in developing ICPMS experiments, sample preparations and separation protocols, and analysis methods and procedures.
• Independently perform ICPMS experiments for elemental and isotopic radioanalytical characterizations on highly radioactive nuclear materials.
• Perform laboratory tests, as needed, to help develop, modify, and refine operational and/or experimental procedures.
• Participate in planning experiments, including establishing priorities within and between projects, and determining the best direction of the laboratory efforts for various experiments, tests, and analysis.
• Maintain training requirements and qualification for ORNL Radiation Worker II.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, and experience interfacing with other research scientists and radiological control technicians.  

This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position, which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug-testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for up to 24 months

Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

This ORNL Postgraduate Research Associates Program is administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
