Software Developer Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) - Post-Bachelor
The Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has an opening for a Post-bachelor's graduate in its Environmental Data Science and Systems group (http://www.esd.ornl.gov/edss/). We seek a recent (within the last 3 years) Undergraduate interested in applied research linking advanced informatics and computer science to data management and distribution in the earth, climate and environmental sciences.
The successful candidate also may be involved with a range of software development and data management applied research and activities to support projects in the Environmental Sciences Data Group. The work will focus on many ORNL-and DOE-related projects, including Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (CDIAC) and National Extreme Events Data and Research Center (NEED). Work on other projects is possible as well, depending on the project needs, funding, and the particular educational interests of the selected candidate.
The candidate must have a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, with a strong background in software development. Some knowledge in one or more earth sciences is advantageous. Currently enrolled students with an anticipated graduation date before January 2016 will also be eligible. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than three years before the date of application appointment and the candidate must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
While experience in fulfilling course requirements is relevant for this position, preference will be given to candidates with experience in practical (deployed) applications, as part of dissertation research, or in other ways beyond stated course requirements.
The appointment is for two years, depending on the funding availability and mutual interest. The anticipated start date for this position is between January and March of 2016. Position includes benefits and relocation assistance.

Strong knowledge in Java programming language, experience of Java server-side technologies and frameworks.
Background in Informatics or computer programming as applied to some type of engineering or scientific application, including strong software development skills for building Web-user interfaces using current tools and technologies such as Drupal.
Strong knowledge in fundamental programming concepts, experience or strong knowledge in Multi-tier software development process such as MVC architecture, as exemplified by at least one deployed application (preferably Internet-facing) developed outside of fulfilling a course requirement. Working experience in Linux (preferred) or Windows servers.
Strong knowledge in Java programming language, experience of Java server-side technologies and frameworks.
