Description

This project will focus on the performance and advancement of trace clean sample preparation and separation methods and procedures focusing on the development of novel chemistry schemes in support of the group’s nuclear forensic portfolios.

The Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) invites applications for a post-masters research associate to assist with current nuclear forensic analytical development projects within the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry and Isotopics Laboratories (NACIL). The successful candidate will focus on advancing trace clean digestion methodologies and chemical separations with emphasis on the lanthanide and actinide suite of elements. Possible projects will include, but are not limited to, detailed studies of trace elemental and isotopic signatures in environmental and nuclear matrices, separations of radiochronometers for age dating nuclear materials, and expanded destructive characterizations for highly enriched uranium (HEU) specimens.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

• Collaborate in the development of trace clean sample preparations and separation protocols, method and procedures.
• Perform laboratory tests as needed to assist in developing, modifying, and refining operational and/or experimental procedures.
• Participate in experimental planning, including establishing priorities within and between projects, and determining the best direction of the laboratory efforts for various experiments, tests, and analysis.
• Maintain training requirements and qualification for ORNL Radiation Worker II.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have strong communication as well as interpersonal skills, the ability to work effectively in a team environment, and have experience interfacing with other research scientists as well as radiological control technicians.

This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.

Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
