In order to promote research and utilize the unique partnership between Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) and the University of Tennessee (UT), the Office of Undergraduate Research at the UT Knoxville campus funds multiple summer internships for its undergraduates. The UTK/ORNL Higher Education Research Experiences (HERE) Summer Internship Program is a 10-week, full-time internship that provides students with research projects in a variety of STEM disciplines at ORNL. Students will learn under the direction of ORNL research staff at either ORNL’s main campus, Hardin Valley campus, or ORNL research related facilities on the UT Knoxville campus. Upon the completion of the internship, students are required to submit and present a poster in the summer poster session and present their research at UT Knoxville Discovery Day in the fall. Successful applicants are placed into labs that best fit their research area of interest in one of five research divisions at ORNL:
- Computing and Computational Sciences
- Energy and Environmental Sciences
- Neutron Sciences
- Nuclear Science and Engineering
- Physical Sciences
Participants may also be considered for National Security Sciences.
Dates of program: June 3, 2019 - August 9, 2019 (selections completed by April 25, 2019)
Benefits:
- $500/week stipend
- Housing in Vol Hall*
- Weekday bus transportation to ORNL if needed
*Housing in Vol Hall is available to students who do not already have local housing arrangements for the summer. There is no cash payment for students with their own arrangements.
Eligibility:
- 18 years or older
- U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) at time of application
- LPRs are subject to DOE approval for ORNL entry
- Rising sophomore, junior, or continuing senior at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville as of June 3, 2019
- Freshmen, seniors graduating May 2019 or alumni are not eligible
- 3.0 GPA or higher (cumulative)
- Must be available for entirety of the internship from June to August
- Must agree to present at Discovery Day in the fall at UT Knoxville
- Have medical insurance effective for entire term of appointment
- Have one academic or professional recommender
- Citizenship: LPR or U.S. Citizen
- Degree: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree.
- Minimum Overall GPA: 3.00
