GIS analysis of ground water impacts from oil spills

The research participant will conduct GIS and modeling analysis of potential impacts to ground water from oil spills. This will include pipeline spills as well as rail car spills. Vulnerability analysis will include private and public wells.
The research participant will apply methods of GIS and hydrology related to spatial and temporal contaminant transport associated with releases of oil and petroleum products. Additionally, this may include the development of multiple spill scenarios for assessing ground water impacts, development and documentation of methods, data development, analysis, and modeling, and report writing.
This training opportunity will provide the research participant with exposure to cutting-edge approaches in assessing ground water impacts and their potential effect on drinking water supplies and associated conceptual and predictive models. This research is informing management strategies for protecting critical ground water resources.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and EPA. The participant will receive a monthly stipend. No funding will be made available to cover travel costs for pre-appointment visits, relocation costs, tuition and fees, or a participant's health insurance. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at EPA in Cincinatti, Ohio. Participants do not become employees of EPA or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

- A doctoral degree in GIS, geography, hydrology, environmental science, or a related field.
