The Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF), advances fundamental understanding of how people live, work, and cooperate with one another. The evidence and insight that researchers generate with SES support help improve quality of life, institutional effectiveness, and economic prosperity. The Division supports disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and methodological research and big data and survey infrastructure. See https://www.nsf.gov/sbe/ses/about.jsp for a list of SES programs and additional information.
The Fellow will assist SES division leadership and program officers in analyses, communications, and related matters to assess a variety of outcomes. Activities include examinations of NSF’s merit review process, portfolio and participant balance for diversity, equity, and inclusion and accessibility and other important considerations. Participation may also focus on assessments of societal impacts of research, effectively communicating social and economic sciences, and measuring the outcomes of relevant awards, etc. In addition, the Fellow will assist division leadership and program officers in a variety of public access and open science (PAOS) efforts, with a primary focus on the implementation of NSF’s 2023 Public Access Plan. This plan was developed in response to the updated PAOS guidelines for federal, science funding agencies issued by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in August 2022. NSF’s Public Access Plan highlights the challenges and opportunities related to equity in PAOS. The Fellow will participate in the NSF PAOS Working Group (PAOS WG), assisting with policy development regarding access to research data, publications, and software code at the agency level.
