About LQC
The Laboratory for Physical Sciences Qubit Collaboratory (LQC) is a national Quantum Information Science (QIS) Research Center that prioritizes the development of the next generation of Quantum Information Scientists. The LQC established the Professional Development in QIS (LQC-PDQ) Program to provide an opportunity for researchers and professionals to spend an immersive tour at the LQC to greatly enhance their technical knowledge and effectiveness in research and management within the QIS field. As a premier QIS research facility supporting large collaborative research projects and housing state of the art equipment, the LQC offers a tremendously unique experience for applicants to further their careers by gaining exposure to and participating in cutting-edge QIS research efforts.
What will I be doing and why should I apply?
As part of LQC-PDQ, the Faculty Quantum Summer Research (QuaSR) Program provides faculty members with the opportunity to build a foundation for future LQC collaborations through participation in advanced research projects and related activities during the summer months. Through onsite participation with government scientists at the LQC, you will gain a deeper understanding of the LQC’s mission and research interests. The Faculty QuaSR will culminate in the development of a research white paper for you to submit for funding consideration that, if selected, would be pursued in collaboration with the LQC at your home institution.
The appointment is intended to be an intensive experience focused on building new and in-depth skillsets and levels of knowledge as they pertain to QIS. LQC's desire is to provide an opportunity for you to greatly enhance your effectiveness in research, education and/or job focus in the field of QIS. While there are no direct deliverables to the LQC, you, along with LQC government scientists, will define outcomes before participation begins and be mindful of progress made towards these goals and towards the development of a white paper research proposal. You are encouraged to promote your participation and experience at the LQC either online or in print, poster or presentation as opportunities present themselves.

What is the appointment length?
It is anticipated that this will be a 10-week appointment during the summer. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the provisions?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by LQC. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other provisions may include the following:
- Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE)
- Relocation Allowance
- Training and Travel Allowance
About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate is a U.S. citizen with a Ph.D. in science, mathematics, or relevant engineering discipline and currently hold a full-time teaching or research appointment at a U.S. accredited degree granting college, university, or technical institution within the U.S. and its territories.
The selected candidate must be able to pass a security clearance review and be approved for access to LPS facilities. Appointment offers will be rescinded should the candidate fail to meet this clearance requirement.
