The Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) laboratory focuses on solutions to operational medical problems such as battlefield neurotrauma and wound infections, decompression sickness, naturally occurring infectious diseases, and biological threat agents; and is home to the DOD bone marrow registry. The NMRC Operational and Undersea Medicine Directorate (OUMD) conducts medical research, development, testing, and evaluation to develop new information and technologies to enhance the health, safety, performance, and deployment medical readiness of Navy and Marine Corps personnel. OUMD researchers continue to persevere to find opportunities to build new programmatic capability and partnerships, and advance research focusing on improving conditions for the warfighter. The Directorate has three departments: Undersea Medicine, NeuroTrauma, and Regenerative Medicine. The Undersea Medicine Department of the Naval Medical Research Center has a current requirement for Postdoctoral Fellow to assist in the design, performance, data analysis and publication of research experiments within the general topics of decompression sickness, oxygen toxicity and extreme environmental exposures. The specific projects in which the incumbents will participate include the following: Mitigation of Undersea Warfighter Relevant Oxygen Toxicity; Optimization of Rescue and Triage of Crew Members during DISSUB; Flying after Diving Decompression Sickness Mitigation; Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Toxicity Mitigation; Assessment of Treatments for Severe Decompression Sickness. Participants will assist with projects under the mentorship of researchers within the department and in collaboration with other scientific and technical staff. They will also propose iterative and novel experiments for funding and produce manuscripts and other peer-reviewed and technical publications resulting from the research in which they participate.
Appointment Length
This is a twelve month research appointment with the option to be renewed additional appointment terms. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by NMRC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.
Applicants should have completed a doctoral degree in physiology, biochemistry or similar fields, with previous diving research experience preferred. To qualify for ORISE, candidates must have completed their degree within the past five years.
