Description
The NMRC laboratory focuses on solutions to operational medical problems such as battlefield neurotrauma and wound infections, decompression sickness, naturally occurring infectious diseases, and biological threat agents; and is home to the DoD bone marrow registry.
The NMRC laboratory is co-located in the Daniel K. Inouye Building with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research at the U.S. Army Forest Glen Annex, Silver Spring, Maryland. NMRC also operates a Biological Defense Research Directorate at the U.S. Army Ft. Detrick Garrison in Frederick, Maryland.

The NeuroTrauma Department at NMRC is seeking a post-baccalaureate candidate to study basic mechanisms of cell and tissue damage as observed in military personnel who receive a traumatic brain injury. This is a challenging opportunity with an exciting research program focused on the physiology, histopathology and molecular biology aspects of brain and other related tissue damage and definition of possible biomarkers of injury as well as targets for potential protection or pharmaceutical therapy after injury. Recent military conflicts have shown that the incidence of both concussive and sub-concussive complications in combat casualties is disproportionally higher than in civilian casualties, leading to the need for a highly sensitive biomarker of injury.

The candidate will be responsible for carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team and other scientific staff.  The incumbent will assist in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development, and investigate the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products. (S)he will interpret experiments and publish data in reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts.
