An ORISE fellowship opportunity is currently available in the Division of Technology and Platform Development (DTPD), All of Us Research Program within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Director (OD) located in Bethesda, Maryland. The All of Us Research Program is building one of the largest biomedical data resources of its kind. The program’s researcher platform, called the All of Us Research Hub, stores health data from a diverse group of participants from across the United States.
On the All of us Research Hub, registered researchers can access All of Us data and tools to conduct studies to help improve our understanding of human health. The All of Us Research Program is an ambitious effort to gather health data from one million or more people living in the United States to accelerate research that may improve health. Currently, the program has enrolled over 600,000 participants and counting. More than 50% and 80% of participants are from racial and ethnic minorities and populations underrepresented in biomedical research, respectively.
What will I be learning?
As an ORISE fellow within DTPD, you will be provided a unique opportunity to learn about the work of the All of Us Research Program and contribute to the program’s scientific, medical, and public health research aims and health equity efforts. Specifically, you will collaborate on scientific projects that enable the development and use of a cloud-based research platform for the conduct of cutting-edge biomedical and public health research. You will participate in the program with a vibrant and diverse team under the guidance of a mentor or mentor team, and other highly-qualified and motivated team of researchers and technology enablers. Specific learning opportunities in this fellowship position include but are not limited to the following:
- Understanding the All of Us researcher platform, its components, uses and operation;
- Learning about program’s data types, scientific priorities, and governance structure;
- Conceptualizing research studies to demonstrate utility of the All of Us program data;
- Analyzing program data for quality and completeness studies;
- Conducting studies using different data types including but not limited to surveys, electronic health records, physical measurements, genomics, etc;
- Interacting with program officials across multiple teams and consortium partners to improve utility and use of the researcher platform;
- Conducting demonstration research projects and analyses using the Researcher Platform;
- Communicating findings to internal and external audiences including DTPD leadership, All of Us senior leadership, and consortium partners;
- Preparing manuscripts for submission to scholarly journals;
- Presenting findings at national meetings, conferences, and workshops;
- Observing and learning scientific project management from expert staff members at consortium meetings, working groups, and project team meetings; and
- Other opportunities may arise during the course of the fellowship.
Participant Benefits
You will receive a competitive monthly stipend based on your academic and professional background. You may be eligible for a health insurance supplement. Health insurance is required to participate in the program. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE.
Appointment Length
The initial appointment is for 3 to 12 months, and may be renewed for additional periods upon the recommendation of All of Us program leadership and contingent on the availability of funds, project assignments, and program rules.
Appointment Location
The appointment is expected to be held on-site at NIH facilities in the Bethesda, Maryland area.
Level of Participation
The appointment is based on 40-hours a week.
Anticipated Start Date
All of Us Program is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected applicant. Applications are reviewed on an on-going basis and appointments will be offered as qualified candidates are identified.
Nature of Appointment
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and the All of Us Research Program. The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, NIH, All of Us Program or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Qualifications
To be accepted, the fellow:
- Must be pursuing or have received a masters, or doctoral degree within the past 60 months in a relevant field of Public Health, Allied Health, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or Social and Behavioral Sciences.

- Transcripts/Academic Records - Recent unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted to complete the application, if a copy of the official transcript is not available at the time of application. Transcripts/Academic Records must include the name of the academic institution, name of the student, completed/in progress coursework and grades. If you are selected, you will be required to provide a copy of your official transcript before the appointment can start.

One (1) Academic or Professional Recommendation - Applicants are required to provide contact information for at least one recommendation in order to submit the application. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation through the Zintellect system, and must complete it before the application is considered complete. Applications without a completed recommendation will not be reviewed. The recommendation should address a candidate's academic record, scientific capabilities, personal characteristics, and potential for success. The recommendation must be submitted through the Zintellect application system. Recommendations submitted via email will not be accepted.
All documents must be submitted via Zintellect, and must be in English or include an official English translation. All application components must be received in the system in order to be considered. Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Supporting materials must be uploaded as PDF files to ensure the document can be searched by Zintellect’s search engine. Documents sent by email, postal mail, or fax will not be considered.
