The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world's largest medical library and a leader in medical informatics and computational biology research. The NLM Intramural Research Program (IRP) directs its efforts toward two broad areas of computational biomedical sciences: 1) computational biology, using biological data to advance algorithms and models to better comprehend biological systems and to connect relationships between any level of biological organization; and 2) computational health sciences, focusing on clinical information processing, including new computational methods for clinical data and health data standards. NLM’s research is driven by Principal Investigators in the Computational Biology Branch of the NLM’s National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI-CBB) and the Computational Health Research Branch in NLM's Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC-CHRB).
Projects within NLM’s IRP are organized into six research areas:

Statistical Methods

What will I be doing?
As a participant you will:
-
Gain experience in independent study and research under the guidance of NLM-IRP staff
-
Learn about the biomedical resources that NIH and NLM currently provide and about the motivations and challenges in current LHNCBC and NCBI-CBB research through seminars, workshops, and lectures
-
Describe study and research results through written and oral communication and improve written work and presentations through critiques with other project participants
-
Become aware of research funding and professional development opportunities for trainees specializing in biomedical informatics and computational biology through discussions with leading practitioners and researchers
-
Participate in training and career development opportunities offered through NLM’s Training Office and the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education
-
Collaborate on research projects with other NIH intramural research laboratories as well as extramural academic groups
What is the anticipated start date?
Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidates.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a competitive stipend for living and other expenses as determined by the NIH. Stipends are typically based on academic level, discipline, and experience. You may also be eligible to receive a health insurance allowance and reimbursement for travel expenses.

Nature of the Appointment
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and NLM. The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, NIH, NLM, LHNCBC, NCBI-CBB or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Preferred skills:

Strong background in biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field

Some experience with computing and information systems, including programming

Previous computer science and/or computer engineering education may be helpful

Have completed or currently pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate degree in a related field.

One (1) Academic or Professional Recommendation - Applicants are required to provide contact information for at least one recommendation in order to submit the application. Recommenders will be asked to complete a recommendation through the Zintellect system, and must complete it before the application is considered complete. Applications without a completed recommendation will not be reviewed. The recommendation should address a candidate's academic record, scientific capabilities, personal characteristics, and potential for success. The recommendation must be submitted through the Zintellect application system. Recommendations submitted via email will not be accepted.
