The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world's largest medical library and a leader in medical informatics and computational biology research. The NLM Intramural Research Program (IRP) directs its efforts toward two broad areas of computational biomedical sciences: 1) computational biology, using biological data to advance algorithms and models to better comprehend biological systems and to connect relationships between any level of biological organization; and 2) computational health sciences, focusing on clinical information processing, including new computational methods for clinical data and health data standards. NLM’s research is driven by Principal Investigators in the Computational Biology Branch of the NLM’s National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI-CBB) and in the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications (LHNCBC).

Projects within NLM’s IRP are organized into six research areas:

• Evolutionary Genomics and Biomolecular Structure

• Health Information Standards and Discovery

• Image Processing

• Natural Language Processing

• Networks, Gene Regulation, and Chromatin

• Statistical Methods

Participants can be involved with on-going research projects in any of these research areas under the guidance of research staff preceptors.  Detailed descriptions of each research area are available at https://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/index.html. 

Learning objectives of this project include:

• Gaining experience in independent study and research under the guidance of LHNCBC and NCBI-CBB staff

• Learning about the biomedical resources that NIH and NLM currently provide and about the motivations and challenges in current LHNCBC and NCBI-CBB research through seminars, workshops, and lectures

• Describing study and research results through written and oral communication and improving written work and presentations through critiques with other project participants

• Becoming aware of research funding and professional development opportunities for trainees specializing in biomedical informatics and computational biology through discussions with leading practitioners and researchers

• Participating in training and career development opportunities offered through NLM’s Training Office and the NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education

• Collaborating on research projects with other NIH intramural research laboratories as well as extramural academic groups

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidates.

You will receive a competitive stipend for living and other expenses as determined by the NIH. Stipends are typically based on academic level, discipline, and experience. You may also be eligible to receive a health insurance allowance and reimbursement for travel expenses.

Nature of the Appointment

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and NLM.  The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, NIH, NLM, LHNCBC, NCBI-CBB or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Preferred skills:

• Strong background in biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field

• Some experience with computing and information systems, including programming

• Previous computer science and/or computer engineering education may be helpful
