The National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is seeking Master degree students or recent graduates who are interested in an environmental epidemiology research participation program.  

The mission of the NIEHS is to discover how the environment affects people, in order to promote healthier lives.  The vision of the NIEHS is to provide global leadership for innovative research that improves public health by preventing disease and disability.   

What will I be doing?

During this appointment you will be mentored by highly trained staff scientists at NIEHS, and will be a part of a team that will focus on identifying novel environmental risk factors for women's cancer.  You will initially focus on evaluating the relationship between airborne metals from industrial emission sites and toenail metal biomarkers among women in the Sister Study prospective cohort and evaluating if these associations vary by race/ethnicity. 

You will also take part in the following activities:

• Develop a comprehensive research proposal outlining relevant background information, study aims and a detailed statistical analysis plan
• Conduct a comprehensive statistical analysis to address research questions
• Orally present research findings at internal and external research meetings
• Summarize research findings in a written manuscript

What is the anticipated start date?

The exact start date will be determined between the mentor and the applicant at the time of selection.   

Appointment Length

The appointment is initially for one year, but may be renewed annually for a maximum of up to four additional years.  Renewals are based on projects needs and available funding.  

Participant Benefits

• Stipend - The monthly stipend amount is determined by the NIEHS, and is typically based on education and experience.  
• Health insurance supplement -  Participants are required to have health insurance coverage throughout the duration of the appointment.  Participants are eligible to purchase plans offered through the ORISE provider.   
• Travel and training allowance  - May be used for attendance at local and national conferences and other relevant training as determined by NIEHS and ORISE.  

Nature of Appointment

This appointment is full-time at the NIH NIEHS facility in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.   

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and the NIH.  Participants do not become employees of NIH, NIEHS, ORAU, ORISE, DOE, nor any other agency, and there are no employment-related benefits. While participant will not enter into an employment relationship, this opportunity will require a suitability/background investigations by NIH.  Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation by NIH. 

The opportunity is open to those who meet the following qualifications:

• Be at least 18 years old by the start date of the appointment
• Have earned an accredited Master's degree within the last five years, or currently pursuing, and majoring in Environmental Health or Epidemiology
