National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. For more than 60 years, NIAID research has led to new therapies, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and other technologies that have improved the health of millions of people in the United States and around the world. NIAID is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). While at NIAID, participants will conduct research focused on understanding, treating, and preventing infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases in NIAID laboratories.

What will I be doing?

The participant will explore the mechanisms by which immunological and structural damage to the GI tract can lead to the systemic immune activation that characterizes chronic HIV and is thought to underlie disease progression to AIDS. This project is expected to yield extremely valuable information on the progression, or lack thereof of HIV. These findings may have significant impact on the clinical management of AIDS in humans. The Human Immunology Research Scientist will collaborate with an investigator in the Vaccine Research Center at NIAID.

Nature of the Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, the NIH, NIAID, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

• Must have graduated with a PhD in Immunology, Virology, or similar field. Unofficial transcripts are accepted at time of application. If selected you will be required to submit official transcripts or letter from an authorized academic official confirming your academic status before appointment can start.
• Must provide proof of health insurance coverage for the entire duration of participation. 
• Must be a US citizen or have a valid immigration status.
