The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) Research & Development Component is offering summer faculty fellowships designed to increase engagement and partnerships between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and NGA.  NGA’s HBCU Summer Faculty Research Fellowship is a 10-week paid appointment which matches fellows with an NGA mentor. Selected candidates will be required to participate in the NGA HBCU Summer Faculty Research Out-Brief, which will be the last week of their appointment.  Up to six fellows will be selected for participation.

What will I be doing?

As an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to increase engagement and partnerships between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and NGA.Selected candidates will be required to participate in the NGA HBCU Summer Faculty Research Out-Brief, which will be the last week of the appointment.

Why should I apply?

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will engage in a variety of research activities. Research areas vary and will be assigned based on the candidate's skills and interests. The topics may include but are not limited to:

• AI/Machine Learning/Natural Language Processing/ Computer Vision
• Data Science, especially GEO applications Predictive Analytics
• Arctic Studies, especially GEO-related Gravity Modeling
• Spectral Sciences,CYBER
• Motion Imagery/Video Sciences
• Radar, especially Synthetic Aperture Radar Crop and Hydrology Studies and Predictions; GIS
• Crop and Hydrology Studies and Predictions 
• Remote Sensing

Please note that all research topics may be considered, as long as the proposed research relates to or incorporates STEM.

What are the appointment provisions?

As the selected candidate, you will receive a $35,000 stipend for participation in the 10-week program and may also be eligible for a travel allowance.

Where will I be located?

Faculty will perform research at their home institution, under the guidance of an NGA mentor.

What is the anticipated start date?

The deadline for application submission is 11:59 p.m. ET on Friday, January 31, 2025, Appointments will begin in the last week of May. Participation requires a commitment of ten consecutive weeks between May 1st and August 31st.

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate will:
Be a citizen of the United States -- PLEASE NOTE dual citizens and foreign nationals are
not eligible.
Be a current full-time faculty member at an HBCU institution.
An active Top-Secret security clearance is preferred though not required.

To evaluate compliance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (20 U.S.C. § 1681 et.seq.), the Department of Defense (DoD) is collecting certain demographic and career information to be able to assess the success rates of women who are proposed for key roles in applications in science, technology, engineering or mathematics disciplines. In addition, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY 2019, Section 1286, directs the Secretary of
Defense to protect intellectual property, controlled information, key personnel, and information about critical technologies relevant to national security and limit undue influence, including foreign talent programs by countries that desire to exploit United States’ technology within the DoD research, science and technology, and innovation enterprise. This requirement is necessary for all research and research-related educational activities.

• Research Capabilities: Concisely explain your research capabilities. Describe the research you have conducted and the techniques with which you are familiar
• Interest: Concisely explain your interest. What specific DOD area of research would you like to explore? Explain how your expertise can impact the desired research area
• Outcome: State your expected/desired outcome(s) of the 10-week experience.
