Description

The Pathology Department of Veterinary Services Program (VSP-P) is one of the main research and development support branches within WRAIR's Center for Enabling Capabilities (CEC), providing support to all animal research protocols. VSP-P provides critical support to all of the many groups conducting neurotrauma research at WRAIR/NMRC, in particular relative to traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs under conditions unique to military operations. WRAIR/NMRC’s TBI research is not only focused on prevention, but optimal management of the patient at the point of injury, while in transit to advanced medical care, and management and mitigation of the many potential long term manifestations of brain injury including PTSD and sleep disorders.

The (VSP-P) is offering a fellowship for a veterinary pathologist who is interested in joining the military medical research field.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will be exposed to a broad sampling of the various lines of effort within the WRAIR/NMRC enterprise through a series of interactive assignments supporting preventative and therapeutic medical research into traumatic brain injury, PTSD, barotrauma, and other related conditions affecting the Warfighter. During this 1-year fellowship, you will directly interact and collaborate with WRAIR/NMRC scientists and staff on multiple projects, and gain exposure to highly specialized scientific methods designed to recreate battlefield injuries and conditions.

Why should I apply?

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to support your professional goals. You will be provided opportunities to cultivate expertise in neuroanatomy, digital histopathology and cutting-edge diagnostic imaging in an intense, focused residency type program. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in scientific discussion and collaboration with the research groups within the WRAIR/NMRC
  • Engaging in detailed analysis of various mechanisms of injury
  • Studying the effect of variation in transport conditions and treatment modalities/regimens on TBI victims
  • Providing an assessment of the current science and possible directions for Army medicine to pursue in its efforts to refine and perfect treatment protocols
  • Utilizing the WRAIR Pathology diagnostic capabilities including digital histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence assays
