The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) is a premier research institution dedicated to soldier and world health. WRAIR is an international leader in the field of science and technology, aiming to conduct biomedical research that is responsive to the Department of Defense and U.S. Army requirements and delivers lifesaving products, including knowledge, technology, and medical material that sustain the combat effectiveness of the warfighter. WRAIR also conducts military psychiatry and neuroscience research, from basic studies to advanced development. WRAIR provides unique research capabilities and innovative medical solutions to a range of Force Health Protection and Readiness challenges currently facing U.S. Service Members, along with threats anticipated during future operations.
The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) is offering an ORISE learning opportunity. This particular opportunity and project will be in the systems biology branch that undertakes the integrative biology approaches to mitigate military-relevant health risks. The Medical Readiness Systems Biology group has decades-long experience in using multi-omics data to find biomarkers to facilitate the precision personalized medication. As an ORISE participant, you will participate in several collaborative studies to include systems biology of diseases of military relevance as an established scientist investigator. As an established scientist within this project, you will showcase sufficient knowledge foundations to grow within the areas of trauma, coagulation, stress, and biomarker research.
Additionally, you will be able to learn and develop new skills in biomarker research and predictive modeling. Developing a better understanding of the pathophysiology of host responses to battlefield related stressors will provide an opportunity for a tremendous expansion of knowledge. This opportunity allows for learning in biomarker research, high-throughput data analysis, data mining, and data integration. During your opportunity as an ORISE established scientist, you will enhance your critical thinking and gain additional research background to provide solutions related to diseases of military relevance, including coagulopathy of trauma, stress, and host responses to stressors.

Appointment Length
This appointment is a six month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Senior scientist with a PhD and more than 15-years of experience in trauma research including coagulopathy of trauma. The senior scientist should have extensive experience in conducting research including data analysis and simulation. They should also have experience in data interpretation and preparation of progress reports and manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
