Description

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) carries out research to develop infectious disease countermeasures and to benefit brain health through studies to enhance our understanding of sleep, traumatic brain injury prevention/treatment and psychological resilience. The Immunology Core within the Malaria Biologics Branch is a core facility dedicated to the immunoprofiling of immune responses to infectious diseases and vaccinations.

As an ORISE participant under the Immunology Core you will be given an opportunity to showcase your experience in extracellular vesicles (EV). In collaboration with the lab chief, you will develop new analytical methods for the detection and characterization of EVs. During your appointment you will gain an in-depth understanding of multiplex testing platforms (Luminex, Mesoscale) and flow cytometry. The disease models will be malaria, bacterial and viral diseases, and the study of immunity impacted by circadian rhythm. In addition to the above platforms, your learning objectives will include gaining a working knowledge of:

  1. Design of experiments
  2. Small lab animal handling
  3. Malaria microscopic diagnostic techniques
  4. Cell Imaging and proteomic analysis of samples
  5. Laboratory and project management
  6. Public speaking and successful grant writing
