Description

The sponsoring research facility for this opportunity is the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, MD. The opportunity will be carried out in both Centers (Infectious Disease Research and Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience) under the mentorship of the director for science education. The mission of the US Army Medical Directorate of the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences (USAMD-AFRIMS) is to conduct state of the art medical research and disease surveillance to develop and evaluate medical products, vaccines, and diagnostics to protect DOD personnel from infectious disease threats—many of which also endanger the men, women and children of Southeast Asia. First formed following the 1958 cholera epidemic as the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) Cholera Research Project, AFRIMS’ scope was broadened in 1960 with a mandate to contribute to the eradication of other infectious diseases.

This research experience will provide an ORISE participant the opportunity to take part in extending the value of the NHP model as an in vitro primary screening platform. This research will further identify early leads to down select drug candidates prior to in vivo studies. With the mentoring and education provided throughout this research experience, the participant will take part in developing new strategies for an in vitro liver stage (iLS) culturing system for relapsing malaria of humans and nonhuman primates (NHP), Plasmodium vivax and P. cynomolgi. During the second phase of this research project, the mentor and participant will collaborate in developing a new P. cynomolgi transgenic reporter lines to improve efficiency of the iLS screening platform.

In addition to providing a unique knowledge and understanding to Plasmodium vivax and P. cynomolgi research, our objective is to focus on the participant’s career development and individual success. The participant will have the opportunity to network and collaborate with other WRAIR scientist, as we prepare them for their next academic achievement or career.

Appointment Length

This appointment is a thirteen week opportunity in Bangkok, Thailand; with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

PhD with experience working on Plasmodium vivax and P. cynomolgi.
