The participant will conduct research to support the laboratory's mission on the development of HIV vaccine candidates and adjuvant formulations for infectious disease vaccines. Under the guidance of the mentor the participant will assist in the manufacture, characterization and analysis of Army Liposome Formulations (ALF). During this fellowship, the participant will acquire the following techniques: ELISA, cell culture, EISPOT, cytokine analysis, peptide synthesis, HPLC, mass spectroscopy, and manufacture of liposomes, including microfluidization, lyophilization dynamic light scattering, particle tracking analysis, and cholesterol determination. The participant will learn methods to assess the antibody and cellular immune responses of immunized animals, documenting and presenting discoveries. The participant will also attend section and laboratory meetings with the mentor to actively engage with team members and to present findings.
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
The participant should have bachelor's degree in biochemistry or related field. The participant should also have experience in a biochemistry, biology or chemistry laboratory for at least 2 months. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required. Knowledge of a scientific graphing program is encouraged.
