Description
We are currently seeking individuals for full-time, paid fellowships to gain STEM experience in the Brain Trauma and Neuroprotection Branch, Center for Military Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) located in Silver Spring, MD. Our research focuses on investigating neuroprotective and neurorestorative therapies for brain trauma using experimental models of severe traumatic brain injury. Our research focuses on investigating neuroprotective and neurorestorative therapies for brain trauma, using experimental models of severe traumatic brain injury. The participant will learn skills that will further their careers in science or medicine, while learning techniques that will transfer into new job opportunities. The participant will have the opportunity to learn how to conduct experiments in a fast-paced neuroscience laboratory environment and will acquire knowledge and understanding in the following areas:
 
  • Rodent surgery
  • Rodent neurobehavioral testing
  • Drug administration
  • Collection of biological samples
  • Euthanasia and necropsy work
  • Histopathological analysis
  • Data entry and presentation of findings at scientific conferences

Appointment Length

This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Participant Benefits

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by WRAIR. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.  Other benefits may include the following:

  • Training and Travel Allowance

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency.  Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

Basic knowledge of neuroscience, molecular biology, and/or physiology, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel is required. Prior research lab experience, especially previous experience with small animal models (rodent), is highly preferred. Animal surgical experience is a plus.

B.S. degree is required. The internship requires a minimum 12-month commitment. A strong GPA (>3.0) with a major in neuroscience, psychology, biology, pre-med/pre-dental/pre-pharmacy, or an equivalent degree is a plus.
