Description

The USAMRICD is offering a post-bachelor or masters level opportunity to participate in laboratory experiments focused on identifying and screening improved medical countermeasures against seizure-inducing chemicals.

Why should I apply and what will I be doing?

The research study objectives are to evaluate the toxicity of chemical agents in animal models and to evaluate the neuropathological and neuroinflammatory responses that may contribute to the development of epileptogenesis, neurodegeneration and long-term behavioral impairments and to evaluate anti-seizure medications for efficacy against chemical-induced seizure and seizure-associated brain damage. The research will provide you with hands-on laboratory experience in small animal models used in medical research.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Learning basic laboratory skills and techniques
  • Assisting with small animal surgery to implant electroencephalographic (EEG) telemetry transmitters for continuous EEG measurement
  • Preparing chemicals for drug assessments studies
  • Conducting histological assessments to identify loss of neurons and gliosis
  • Compiling data in spreadsheets, graphically represent data and conduct statistical analysis of data
  • Preparing posters and slides for scientific presentations
