The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD) is the Department of Defense's lead laboratory for medical chemical defense research. As a subordinate element of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), the institute conducts research for development of medical countermeasures to treat exposure to various chemical threat agents for protection of soldiers and civilians. U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (MRICD) is the Department of Defense's lead laboratory tasked with the development of medical countermeasures against chemical threats. For more information about MRICD, please visit: https://usamricd.apgea.army.mil/.
This research will extend the participant's educational experience by teaching the intern research methods in a laboratory setting. The intern will gain hands on experience in studies of medical chemical defense and gain an understanding and technical skills in conducting behavioral neuroscience research. Participant will assist with studies utilizing in vivo pharmacology, neuroscience and toxicology to determine basic mechanisms of action of toxic chemicals as well as applied studies to evaluate medical countermeasures against toxic chemical exposures in animal models. Studies utilize a multidisciplinary approach. Intern will learn to evaluate electroencephalographic data for seizure identification, and how to perform behavioral assessments in animal subjects using state-of-the-art automated imaging programs; learn to prepare routine drug solutions, utilize microscopes for analysis of brain pathology, tabulate and summarize data using spreadsheets, perform detailed statistical analysis and prepare tables/graphs of data. In conjunction with mentor, prepare detailed methods and results sections of experiments for presentations and publication in scientific journals and assist with presentations when opportunities arise. Conduct literature searches under guidance of the mentor and participate in meetings with other interns and scientific staff to increase knowledge in medical chemical defense and in the field of neuroscience. The intern will learn how to conduct research under controlled conditions and will gain an understanding of research methods that they may then apply to future endeavors in a career in science or medicine. The interns will serve as an apprentice, learning how to conduct research and gaining technical skills necessary to do research, as well as to learn how to interpret data and develop critical thinking about the results as it relates to medical chemical defense.
Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by MRICD. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
While participants will not enter into an employment relationship with DOD or any other agency, this opportunity will require a suitability investigation/background investigation. Any offer made is considered tentative pending favorable outcome of the investigation.

Requires good organizational skills, responsible individual and attention to detail.
Participant must be willing to submit for a security clearance upon arrival and be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
