Description

The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) is offering an internship/fellowship for the Community Engagement (CE) Project.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers within the CE Project with a key focus to reach minority and at-risk populations in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area, including Black, Latino and immigrant populations. The CE project has several interrelated project goals including:

  • To increase WRAIR researchers’ knowledge and awareness of community needs, values, and preferences in relation to clinical research.
  • To increase regional awareness of WRAIR clinical research and its importance.
  • To address misperceptions/misconceptions about the research enterprise.
  • To support effective strategies for recruitment and retention in clinical trials.

Throughout your fellowship, you will be involved in activities in the DC metropolitan area. This opportunity is full-time, although some meetings may occur after business hours depending on community availability and schedule needs. Some activities are conducted virtually, and some are in-person; all activities will be conducted in accordance with local public health guidelines.

Why should I apply?

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Overall, you will:

  • Interpret qualitative and quantitative methods to assess community members' attitudes, perspectives and experience with regard to clinic research.
  • Apply scientific knowledge in the fields of STEM education
  • Gain experience in educational interventions, statistics, and interpretation of results
  • Develop educational activities to inform, teach and encourage dialogue about clinic trials
  • Apply experimental design for STEM modules
  • Train on developing, implementing and evaluating a strategic outreach plan to achieve project goals.
  • Implement and assess Community Advisory Board (CAB) educational approaches.
  • Engage in building and sustaining partnerships with community organizations.
  • Learn effective strategies for developing and supporting the CAB.
  • Participate in other team activities as they arise.
