The Viral Disease Program (VDP) at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) is seeking an Established Scientist to engage in programmatic and research activities.
What will I be doing and why I should apply?
As an ORISE participant and under the guidance of a mentor, you will experience the framework of viral diseases research to the Army and collaborations to maximally advance the program toward scientific and medical goals. This opportunity focuses on the following key objectives, which will be introduced within a broad panel of activities that will develop your understanding of the complete conceptual and operating framework upon which VDB is supported:
- Participate in scientific discussion and develop understanding of VDB's mission, objectives, and research programs
- Learn VDB's technical approaches and the technology development roadmap strategy
- Engage in detailed data analysis activities to gain comprehensive understanding for VDB’s research endeavor
- Participate in collaborative research projects between WRAIR-Main and the OCONUS laboratories for supporting VDB's technical program as well as host country engagements
- Learn about the various community engagement activities that are supported and encouraged by VDB to enhance the technical program and enable overall program success
- Gain experience in the collaborative viral diseases surveillance that VDB conducts with other USG agencies (NIH, CDC, FDA, DoS, etc.)
- Participate in preparation and submission of abstracts and manuscripts, research proposals, regulatory and IP documentations.

What is the anticipated start date?
The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.
What is the appointment length?
This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. This internship may be part or full-time. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About WRAIR
The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) aims to conduct biomedical research that is responsive to Department of Defense and U.S. Army requirements and delivers lifesaving products including knowledge, technology and medical material that sustain the combat effectiveness of the warfighter. WRAIR provides unique research capabilities and innovative medical solutions to a range of Force Health Protection and Readiness challenges currently facing U.S. Service Members, along with threats anticipated during future operations. These research opportunities include ongoing efforts to identify and treat traumatic brain injury as well as to understand and mitigate the deleterious effects of repeated exposures to blast.
The Viral Diseases Branch (VDB) is one of the main research and development Branches within WRAIR's Center for Infectious Diseases Research (CIDR). VDB works in collaboration with academia, industry, and other government agencies to detect and eliminate viral threats to Soldiers by supporting disease surveillance around the world to inform force health protection decisions, identify targets for new preventives and treatments, and develop arbovirus and respiratory virus vaccines.
VDB quickly identifies and responds to emerging and existing viral threats to keep Soldiers in the fight. This unique infrastructure is organized to monitor viral epidemics and outbreaks throughout the world, provide early warnings, and develop products such as approved vaccines for influenza, Japanese encephalitis, adenovirus and hepatitis A. About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. The qualified candidate will have received a PhD in biomedical sciences or MD with a minimum of twenty years of experience with DoD R&D and PD program management.
Preference will be given to applicants with:
- DoD qualifications in Science and Technology, Program Management, and minimum of 20 years in DoD R&D setting
- Multiple years of experience in intramural or extramural R&D efforts as well as contracted or assistance agreement type collaborations
- Experience with human subjects protection requirements for conduct of clinical studies
- Working knowledge of FDA IND regulations and understanding of the processes for regulated product development
- Knowledge of infectious diseases research and understanding of the DoD mechanisms for funding R&D
