The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD) is the Department of Defense’s lead laboratory for medical chemical defense research. As a subordinate element of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), the institute conducts research for development of medical countermeasures to treat exposure to various chemical threat agents for protection of soldiers and civilians. This opportunity will enhance your research and learning experiences and capabilities by focusing on applied laboratory-based experiments and producing data on the ability of various products to decontaminate chemical agents in animal models.  Throughout this opportunity, you will obtain hands-on experience in animal research that spans across a variety of scientific disciplines such as biology, toxicology and physiology, all in compliance with IACUC protocols. 

What will I be doing?

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will learn to compile, analyze, and present experimental data using multiple spreadsheets, statistical analysis, and presentation programs with the possibility of contributing to the development of standard operating procedures, abstracts, posters, and manuscripts.  Your mentor will also focus on your personal career development by providing safety training, education on maintaining laboratory notebooks and accurate records management of chemical inventory of chemical agents required by USAMRICD and other similar research agencies.

What is the appointment length?

This opportunity will remain open until a candidate is selected; however, MRICD will begin the review of applications immediately and is prepared to begin this appointment upon selection of a candidate. This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USAMRICD. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Applicant should be currently pursuing or have completed a Bachelor's degree in biology or related field by the start of their appointment.  For consideration, applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

Preferred skill-set and/or experience:

•  The participant must be willing to work with animal models such as rats and swine. While desired, experience with animal research is not necessary.

The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination(s).
